Defendify Lends a Paw at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland

The Defendify team recently spent the afternoon helping out at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) as one of our regularly scheduled group volunteer events.

We’ve been fortunate enough to use a mix of volunteer events from maintaining wilderness trails to cooking for local families in the past, and as a group of animal lovers, we were excited to keep trying new volunteer experiences and get to pat some pets along the way. And don’t think we got out of an animal shelter event without a souvenir—one Defendify team member went back first thing the next morning to adopt a puppy that stole his heart.

Besides playing with cats, dogs, and other furry friends and touring the ARLGP’s new facility, the Defendify team pitched in on a variety of tasks around the shelter: sorting, moving and organizing donations, cleaning and setting up cat enclosures, and preparing outdoor spaces for the winter season. The ARLGP currently has over 400 weekly volunteers, but relies on groups to tackle larger-scale projects.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland’s mission is to nurture the connection between people and pets to advance animal welfare and improve the quality of life in our community. The ARLGP provides temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned, confiscated, and relinquished animals, and places as many pets as possible into responsible and caring homes. Additionally, the group builds awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals and strives to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering.

In addition to working with Maine-based pets, the ARLGP partners with 60 different rescue organizations nationwide to bring in cats, dogs, and small animals from outside of Maine. This transfer program not only saves the lives of thousands of animals across the country, but also helps the local Maine community: We learned that the ARLGP wouldn’t be able to meet local demand for adoptable pets without bringing in animals from outside the state. (It’s no wonder the demand is so high—Portland, Maine is such a pet-friendly city!)

The Defendify team had a paw-some time volunteering with the ARLGP, and would highly recommend the experience to any interested groups or individuals. And of course, if you’re interested in bringing a new pet into your life, you can check out the ARLGP website.
